[1] The DNS servers listed above as Level3 will automatically route to the nearest DNS server operated by Level3 Communications, the company that provides most of the ISPs in the US their access to the Internet backbone.

[2] Google also offers IPv6 public DNS servers: 2001:4860:4860::8888 and 2001:4860:4860::8844.

[3] Securly's DNS servers block adult content by default, including of course X-rated content but also adult oriented pages on websites like Wikipedia, adult themed searches on Google, and more. The grown-ups in the house can sign up here to bypass all restrictions.

[4] OpenDNS also offers DNS servers that block adult content, called OpenDNS FamilyShield. It's also free but you do have to sign up here. A premium DNS offering is also available, called OpenDNS Home VIP.

[5] The Norton ConnectSafe DNS servers listed above block sites hosting malware, phishing schemes, and scams. Use 198.153.192.50 and 198.153.194.50 to block those sites plus those with pornographic content. Use 198.153.192.60 and 198.153.194.60 to block all previously mentioned site categories plus those Norton deems "non-family friendly."

[6] ScrubIT also offers "filtered" DNS servers that restrict access to pornographic and malicious web sites. Those DNS servers are 67.138.54.100 and 207.225.209.66 and you can read more about it here.

[7] DNSResolvers.com says they do not "alter" the traffic in any way, including correcting "typos and non-existent domains."

[8] The DNS servers listed here for OpenNIC are just two of many in the US and across the globe. Instead of using the OpenNIC DNS servers listed above, see their complete list of public DNS servers here and use two that are close to you. OpenNIC also offers some IPv6 public DNS servers.

[9] These Public-Root DNS servers are the only two currently operating in the United States but if you're located ouside the US, see their complete list here and choose the best servers based on your location.

[10] The censurfridns.dk DNS servers are uncensored, operated by a privately funded individual, and are physically located in Denmark. You can read more about them here. IPv6 DNS servers are also available at 2002:d596:2a92:1:71:53:: and 2002:5968:c28e::53

[11] Hurricane Electric also has an IPv6 public DNS server available: 2001:470:20::2.

[12] puntCAT is physically located near Barcelona, Spain. The IPv6 version of their DNS server is 2a00:1508:0:4::9.

Note: Primary DNS servers are sometimes called preferred DNS servers and secondary DNS servers are sometimes called alternate DNS servers. Primary and secondary DNS servers can be "mixed and matched" to provide another layer of redundancy.

How to remove permanent hidden shared folders windows

How can I disable the Administrative Share creation in Windows NT/2000/XP/2003?

Every Windows NT/W2K/XP/2003 machine automatically creates a share for each drive on the system.
These shares are hidden, but available with full control to domain administrators. The drive letter,
followed by the $ sign is the name, and it is shared from the root. When trying to attain a highly secure
network, you may wish to address this potential security issue by disabling these shares, or at least
restricting their permissions to specific users or services.

The default-hidden shares are:

C$ D$ E$ - Root of each partition. For a Windows NT workstation/W2K/2003/XP Professional
computer only members of the Administrators or Backup Operators group can connect to these
shared folders. For a Windows NT Server/W2K Server computer, members of the Server
Operators group can also connect to these shared folders.

ADMIN$ - %SYSTEMROOT% This share is used by the system during any remote administration
of a computer. The path of this resource is always the path to the W2K/NT system root (the
directory in which W2K/NT is installed usually C:\Winnt and in XP it's C:\Windows).

FAX$ - On W2K Server, this used by fax clients in the process of sending a fax. The shared folder
temporarily caches files and accesses cover pages stored on the server.

IPC$ - Temporary connections between servers using named pipes essential for communication
between programs. It is used during remote administration of a computer and when viewing a
computer's shared resources. This share can be very dangerous and can be used to extract large
amounts of information about your network, even by an anonymous account.

NetLogon - This share is used by the Net Logon service of a W2K, 2003 and NT Server computer
while processing domain logon requests, and by Pre-W2K computers when running logon scripts.

PRINT$ - %SYSTEMROOT%\SYSTEM32\SPOOL\DRIVERS Used during remote administration of
printers.
It is possible to simply remove the share from Server Manager (in NT) or Shared Folders (in W2K/XP
/2003) but the problem with this method is that the shares will automatically be recreated when the
machine reboots.
You can disable the automatic administrative share creation via Group Policy, but this is a much simpler
way:
In order to disable these shares permanently, a registry edit will be necessary.

Servers

For NT 4.0/W2K/Windows Server 2003s, the change is:
Hive: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE Key: SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanManServer\Parameters
Name: AutoShareServer Data Type: REG_DWORD Value: 0
Idiot proof note: If you can't find the value in the registry under the exact location (i.e. it does not
exist) - please right click in the right pane of the window and create it.
Note: A reboot is necessary for this to take effect.

Workstations
For NT 4.0 Workstation/W2K Pro/XP Pro, the change is:
Hive: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE Key: SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanManServer\Parameters
Name: AutoShareWks Data Type: REG_DWORD Value: 0
A double idiot proof note: If you can't find the value in the registry under the exact location (i.e. it
does not exist) - please right click in the right pane of the window and create it.
Note: Again, a reboot is necessary for this to take effect. If you want the administrative shares to be
re-created, you can change the value back to 1.
Note: Some applications depend on the presence of these shares. If things stop working you'll know to
re-enable the shares.
Security note: Unfortunately this registry hack does NOT stop the IPC$ share and this is a share that

is often used by hackers to enumerate systems before attack since it can yield a wealth of information

about your system names, your user names, and more. If your ACL permissions are not correct or you
haven't disabled anonymous user access or you haven't disabled the guest account then this port can
lead to total system compromise within minutes!

User Accounts and Permissions Windows 7

 User Accounts and Permissions

1. How do I setup User Accounts in Windows 7?
It depends on whether you have Home Premium or Professional. In Home, click on Start, Settings, Control Panel, User Accounts and Family Safety and click 'Add or remove user accounts'. To create a new account, click on Manage another Account and then Create a new account. Enter the name of the new account, select whether its a Standard (recommended) or administrator account and click on Create Account.
For accounts you can set or change the password, change the login picture, change the account type and set up Parental Controls if the account is for a child.
If a user forgets their password in the future, you can create a Password Reset disc which can be used on the login screen to regain access.
For Professional or Ultimate, you use the Local Users and Groups (or Computer Management) admin tool from Start, Programs, Administrative Tools. You can also access it by right clicking My Computer and select Manage.
2. What is an Administrator user?
By default windows is installed with one 'administrator' account and a guest account. An administrator account can change any settings on the computer, install drivers, install programs, change file/folder permissions, change entries in the registry and so on. When Windows 7 is installed, the user can specify additional accounts with administrator priviledges, when then happens the original 'administrator' account is hidden. The only way to login as 'administrator' is to boot into Safe Mode.
3. What is a Standard User?
A standard user make make changes in their own account such as desktop appearance, themes, create icons on their desktop, run programs and load and save files. They cannot install drivers, install programs or make system wide changes.,
4. How do I set Folder Permissions in Windows 7?

To set permissions in Windows 7, right click the folder and select Properties and click on the Security tab which shows the current file and folder permissions:
Security tabAt the top is a list of users and groups, and below is the list of permissions. The permissions are as follows:
Full control - can read, write and change files and change permissions.
Modify - can read, write and change files only.
Read & Execute - can read files and execute program files or scripts.
List folder contents - can view a list of files but cannot view contents of files
Read - can read contents of files
Write - can create files or folders and change files
Special permissions - combination of permissions set in the Advanced tab for more granular control.

Advanced tab.

Advanced
Permissions -Change permissions with more fine tuning and you can turn inherited permissions on or off.
Auditing -Specify what changes to files and folders are audited and recorded in the Security event viewer log. You also need to enable auditing in the Local Security policy console as well for it to work.
Owner - Specify who is the owner of the file and folders. Useful when Quota'ing is enabled on NAS or SAN network folders.
Effective Permissions -Used to view what the actual or effective rights are applied to a given user or group when troubleshooting access issues.

5. How do I delete old user Profiles?

User profiles are stored in C:\Users. There are special folders called Public and Default which must NOT be deleted as they contain the a shared profile for shared documents and a Default user profile used to create new accounts. Profiles can be deleted via the System Control Panel, select the Advanced tab and then User Profiles. You can copy or delete profiles here.

6. My profile is corrupt and using a default. How do I fix it?

Create a new account and login with it, then copy the folders from your old profile into your new profile in C:\Users such as Application Data, Local Settings, Desktop, Favourites, My Documents, Send To, Start menu but not then ntuser.dat or ntuser.dat.log files.
7. How do I create a Power User?

A Power User has more permissions than a Standard User and can read/write to files in C:\Windows or C:\Program Files and make some system changes. This feature is not available in Home editions. In Professional or Ultimate, you just need to add the user to the Power Users group via the Computer Management console.

8. How do I customise the Default User?

The Default user profile is used when creating new accounts in Windows 7. It contains the default settings for all new accounts created on Windows machines. Usually, when you create a new account and login, the default user's settings are copied to the new profile, then the user can customise their setup as they wish. If you wish everyone to have the same settings from the start. You need to copy the settings to the default user. In Windows 7, you have to use the Administrator user for this. First, create a new user called NewAdmin, then login with it, logout. Login as administrator and then use the Control Panel to change the settings as you wish, change the My Documents location, Screen Savers, backdrops and so on. Then logout when done. Login as an NewAdmin user and load the System control panel, click on Advanced, user profile Settings and select the NewUser profile from list, click on Copy To and browse for C:\Users\Default and click ok to copy settings.

9. I can not log in to Windows 7, I have forgotten my password?
You can use your Password Reset Disk which you created when you first installed Windows 7 or when you created accounts to reset your password. To use the disk, boot up Windows 7 as normal, on the Welcome screen click your user and then click on the Question mark button, the Did you forget your password message appears, click use your password reset disk to start the Password Reset Wizard to set a new password.
If you do not have this disk or deleted your user, reboot in Safe Mode by pressing F8 during the boot up sequence and login with the built in Administrator user and use the User Control Panel to change your password or create a new user.
10. I have installed some programs but they do not appear in the Start menu when I login as another user?
For users to see program shortcuts they must be either copied to their Profile (C:\User\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start menu\Programs) or in the ProgramData (c:\progradata\Microsoft\Windows\Start menu\Programs). If you install a program and the shortcuts do not appear in another user's account then you need to move the shortcuts from your profile to the ProgramData start menu location.
You can access either location quickly by right clicking the start menu icon at the bottom left and click either Open (or Explore) for your own program short cuts or Open all users for shared program short cuts.
11. Can I rename my profile folder in C:\Users?
It is possible unfortunately, a lot of Registry entries will point to files and folders in your Profile. It is better to backup your Profile to another directory, as an administrator user, (create one if you only have your own), login, goto System Control Panel, Advanced, User Profiles and select Copy To to copy it to another folder. Then delete your old user account (along with the old profile), create a new user, login as the new user to create a new profile. Then logout and login as an Administrator and copy the profile into your new Users folder.
12. I have some files, they are private and I cannot access them?
You need to grab Ownership of the file, this can be done via the Properties of the folder, click on Security, Advanced, Change Owner.
13. Can I move folders from C:\Users to another location?
Yes you can, the Documents folder is easiest to move, locate C:\Users\<username>\Documents folder on your hard disk, right click it and select Properties and select the Location tab enter a new directory and click Move.
The Temporary Internet Files can be relocated using the Internet Options control panel (see Settings, Move Folder). Other folders can be changed using a program called X-Setup or use Regedit and change locations in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ Explorer\ShellFolders. So you can move your Favourites, Cookies and Application Data etc elsewhere.
14. How do I change my password?
You can change it via the User Accounts control panel, the Computer Management console or sometimes via the Ctrl+Alt+Del screen and select Change Password. You can also use the Net user username new_password command to change passwords of a user.
15. How do I turn off or change the User Account Control dialogs?
You can change it in Control Panel, User Accounts and Family Safety, User Accounts and Change User Account Control Settings. Unlike Windows Vista there are now four levels to choose from:
a) Always notify (when installing software or when making Windows changes or settings).
b) Default. Only notify me when programs try to make changes to my computer.
c) Notify me only when programs try to make changes to my computer (do not dim the desktop)
d) Never notify me when installing programs or making changes to Windows.
16. How do I enable the built in Administrator account?
In Vista, the administrator account is disabled and hidden. To renable access, open a command prompt using Run as administrator first, then enter:
Net user administrator /active:yes . The account will then be available on the login screen when you logout.
17. How can I restrict or limit usage for a given user?
You can use Parental Controls (see Control Panel, User Accounts and Family Safety) to restict or allow which programs a user can use, you can also limit the time they can use on the computer and control which games they can play using their rating, content or title.

How to Clear pagefiles.sys in Windows 7

How to Clear the Windows Paging File at Shutdown

Let me fix it myself

  1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
  2. Change the data value of the ClearPageFileAtShutdown value in the following registry key to a value of 1:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management
If the value does not exist, add the following value:
    Value Name: ClearPageFileAtShutdown
    Value Type: REG_DWORD
    Value: 1

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management
If the value does not exist, add the following value:Value Name: LargeSystemCache
    Value Type: REG_DWORD
    Value: 1

This change does not take effect until you restart the computer.

Create Booting USB HBCD

36 - Boot to Hiren's Boot CD from a USB drive (v13/v14/v15.1/15.1DLC)

Hiren's Boot CD (HBCD) is a heavily modified and illegal version of Microsoft Windows XP. However, it is very prevalent on the internet and the ISO file can be easily downloaded. If you have a licence to run Windows XP on your computer (e.g. if your computer has a Windows XP, Windows Vista Business or Ultimate or Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate Certificate Of Authenticity label on it) then you can legally run XP (but only on that computer - but not dual boot!).

Hiren's Boot CD 13.2 and later versions even includes RMPrepUSB v2.1.620, even though no permission was asked and the software is copyrighted and distribution is forbidden! However, in this case I will regard it as a form of flattery!

This tutorial describes how you can make any USB Flash memory drive (aka pen drive or thumb drive or UFD) or USB hard drive into a bootable drive that will boot and run Hiren's Boot CD.

For more information on which utilities are contained on HBCD please visit the HBCD web site here.

See Easy2Boot for instructions on making a simple MultiBoot USB drive quickly and easily!

Step 1 - Download Hiren's Boot CD

  1. Download the ZIP file for HBCD (e.g. v15.2) from here. Click on the download link for the ZIP file (located 3/4 of the way down the page)

  2. The file is currently called Hirens.BootCD.15.1.zip and is 498MB in size - check the file size is correct after you have downloaded it!

  3. Version 2.1.630 or later of RMPrepUSB can extract the contents of an ISO directly. Just set the name of the ISO in box 5 Copy Files of RMPrepUSB (see Fig 3 below).

       - OR -

Extract the contents of the ZIP file using 7Zip or your favourite unzip program. You should now have a file called Hiren's.BootCD.15.1.iso.
You can Mount the ISO file using the free software SlySoft Virtual CloneDrive from here or use any other ISO extraction/mounting tool you may already have (if you already have burnt a CD then you can use the CD instead of mounting the image)  - you should now see in Windows Explorer the contents of the ISO file...

Fig. 1 Right-click on the ISO file and select the Mount (Virtual CloneDrive) entry.

Fig. 2 Contents of the Virtual drive that you have mounted the ISO file onto (note the HBCD folder).

Step 2 - Format and prepare your USB drive

The next step will make a bootable USB drive and then copy the files from the HBCD to the USB drive. You will need a 512MB or larger USB Flash memory drive or USB Hard disk. Download and install RMPrepUSB from this website. Use RMPrepUSB to wipe it and make partition of  512MB or more using these RMPrepUSB settings 1-5 :

    1 - MAX
2 - HIRENS (or any name you like)
    3 - XP
4 - FAT16 + Boot as HDD  (or FAT32 + Boot as HDD if the drive is over 2GB) - do not use NTFS as the DOS utilities may not work!
5 - Tick the Copy OS Files box and select the drive letter of your mounted Virtual HBCD drive (do not tick the BartPE checkbox) - OR pick the ISO file that you downloaded if you have not mounted the ISO file previously.
    6 - click Prepare Drive

Follow the prompts.

Fig. 3 Note: In later versions of RMPrepUSB you can specify the name of the ISO file as the 5 Copy Files path
e.g. set the path to C:\temp\Hiren's-Boot-CD.15.1.ISO

Step 3 - Install grub4dos boot loader

Click on the RMPrepUSB - Install grub4dos button to install grub4dos, choose 'Yes' for the MBR option and press the ENTER key when prompted and allow it to copy over the grldr file to the USB drive.

Step 4 - Copy the menu.lst file

Grub4dos needs to have a menu file. Copy the menu.lst file which is now located in the HBCD folder of the USB drive to the root of the USB (top level).

Your USB drive contents should be as shown below and contain 6 files and one HBCD folder (actually the only files needed are the grldr and menu.lst file and the whole HBCD folder - you can delete the other 4 files):

Tip:
If you don't want to replace an existing menu.lst file, simply add the entry below to your existing grub4dos menu.lst file

title Boot Hirens Boot CD
configfile /HBCD/menu.lst

Testing you USB drive

To test it, you can press the F11 key whilst running RMPrepUSB - this will launch a QEMU emulation session (it will not harm your Windows system). You should see the grub4dos menu as shown below appear in a QEMU window. Test an HBCD menu option (e.g. Mini Windows XP) to see if it boots correctly (Note: if it crashes QEMU the first time, try F11 again as it sometimes works a 2nd time for some strange reason!). Click inside the QEMU window to interact with Mini XP (it may be slow to react as the whole XP OS is emulated) and when you have finished press the two CTRL+ALT keys on the keyboard to exit the emulator. You can quit/close the emulator by clicking on the Windows X icon at the top right of the window. You may find that the mouse/keyboard does not work in QEMU if you try some other menu items (e.g. Mini Linux).

You should see this menu - select the Mini Windows Xp menu item and press ENTER

The HBCD XP Desktop (booted inside Windows 7 64-bit OS using the RMPrepUSB QEMU F11 function)

Now go try it for real on a real system. You may need to set your BIOS boot order so that it will boot from a USB drive before it's hard disk. Do not unplug the USB drive whilst XP is running or some functions may not work.

Using HBCD Mini XP

  • To set up networking, click on the Network Setup desktop icon.
  • For wireless connectivity, first run Install all Hardware (HWPnP) and then run the Wireless Setup link.
  • You can then run Opera by clicking on the blue Internet icon on the desktop.
  • Click on the HBCD Menu icon to install and run more software from the WinTools folder, including RMPrepUSB!
  • Click on the EN icon in the system tray to change keyboard layout.
  • Troubleshooting

If you only see a few icons on the MiniXP desktop, then you have not copied the \HBCD folder over to the USB drive correctly. Check that the USB drive has an \HBCD folder as shown in the second screenshot in Step 4 above.

Hirens Boot CD 15.1 DLC version (with mini Windows 7)

This download can also be installed in a similar way to that described above:
    1. Format and prepare a grub4dos USB drive as in Step 2 above
    2. Install grub4dos as in Step 3 above
    3. Extract the contents of the ISO to the USB drive (copy all files and folders)
    4. Copy the \DLC1\menu.lst file to the root folder of the USB drive (or add a configfile /dlc1/menu.lst entry to your existing grub4dos menu.lst file)
    5. To fix a bug in 15.1 DLC version 2 where it does not find the DLC1 folder when running Old Dos apps, overwrite the file at \DLC1\DOS\OLDDOSUSB.GZ with this one.

If you are using the DLC download DLC.Boot.2013.v1.0.iso from http://dlcboot.webuda.com/ then use this menu:

    title DLC1 via grub4dos
    configfile /dlc1/menu/menu.lst
